The accident happened at 7.15am local time on Friday at Barcelona's Franca train station, one of the busiest in the city.
The front of the commuter train was badly damaged after it smashed into a buffer as it arrived from the village of San Vicente Calders, around 50 miles away.
Most of the injured were travelling in the front carriage, and were standing up ready to leave the train.
When it crashed into the buffer, the force knocked them to the ground and broke the windows in many of the front carriages.
